Its on...
Genesis have been playing the Last Domino tour for the last 20 days or so across the UK. The tour has been split into two tranches so far. The UK leg in September and October 2021 and then they move to North America in November and December 2021. And they are the only dates for which tickets have been sold.
I sat a dinner on Thursday night and an American couple on the table next to me had flown in from the US to see them as at the point he bought his tickets Genesis had not announced any US dates.
And then on Friday morning the bomb shell landed:
What the ....
But the clues were there the night before.
At one point in the set on previous shows Phil walks over to the support singers during one of the imfamious Genesis instrumentals but on the night I was there he walks over and leans on the drum stage where his son is doing a super job as the new Genesis tour drummer.
And at the end of the concert there was not a band line up on the stage to take the applause of the full Glasgow Hydro arena.
The communications from band sources state that 4 people have tested positive for COVID. 2 are said to be band members, 1 a family member and 1 a member of the crew.
But will it restart?
Obviously the message from the band is that the UK dates that have been canceled will be rescheduled into 2022.
I looked at Phil on stage, though as much as it pains me to say, he does not look a well man.
I beleive that if Phil feels well enough he will continue to meet the bands obligations. And I sincerley hope he does as those that have yet to see the band will not be disapointed. The set list has some songs from the early days of Genesis to the more pop orientated 80's and 90's songs.
But will the tour be extended out to a European, Asian, Australian and South American tour. And while I'd love for the fans in those regions to see the band I don't think it will happen.
'Let's put this to bed'
'Let's put this to bed' was the comment that Phil made a while back. And while I do think unfortunately that this will be the last time I see Genesis live, I would love for them to reform in Surrey at the legendary Genesis studio (Fisher Farm) and record new material before the band are finally done and to quote Mike 'put to bed because the grass is gowing over them'.
Come on guys go back to the studio, create some new material, maybe some more legendary 'LONGS' as well as exceptional 'SHORTS'.
When I bought my tickets to this concert 18 months ago I said to me the cost was irrelavant I just wanted to see them again live. I was in Paris in 2007. And I have to be honest if European shows are scheduled I will be in Paris again to see them.
The Hydro on Thursday was full. How many other groups who's average age is 70 can fill venues this large?
Come on guys 'Turn it on Again'.
