Over the weekend a post popped up in my social media feed telling me that Korg were launching a new model of the Korg Nautilus, called the Korg Nautilus AT. Where AT stands for After Touch.
Seriously after 3 years Korg are adding After Touch to this workstation. A feature that many musicians in the community though shouldn't have been removed from the platform in the first place.
Now that this announcement has arrive some of the other announcements start to make sense specifically those that related to;
The Nautilus was being discounted until the end go June 2023. With the arrival of the Korg Nautilus AT the price of the Nautilus has again shot up for AT models. Although the original Nautilus has remained discounted.
Now many people that I have talked to have stated that the lack of after touch was an issue, but it wasn't the main reason that they haven't purchased a Nautilus. Many have sited the fact that the Korg Nautilus just wasn't the Korg Kronos that preceded it.
Many musicians that rely on the Korg Kronos to make a living have been purchasing second hand Korg Kronos's, which I might add have shot up in price on the second hand market in over the last year, or making the decision to leave the platform for the competition.
This is not meant to be a Korg Nautilus bashing blog as in all honesty the Nautilus is a very functional workstation, but the perception is that it hasn't move the bar far enough to replace the Korg Kronos. And also initially there was not a migration path between the two keyboards.
The other point that is noticeable with the Korg announcement is that the AT only comes in two models; a 61-key version and an 88-key version. The 76 key version is omitted from this new Korg Nautilus range.
I have to be honest, if I had invested in a Korg Nautilus in the last 6 month and now found a new model with after touch had been launched, I would at this point be a wee bit annoyed. And I am guessing that you can't retrofit the aftertouch into an older model given how this was deployed in older models.
What are your thoughts on this announcement?
